Information/Instructional Design: Definition

Posted on March 21, 2011

Information Design refers to an approach in design that takes complex data and transforms it into information that is easily understood and comprehensible by a wide range of people. This is generally done through a variety of ‘design methodologies’ including but not limiting to: graphic design, instructional design, illustration, interface design and interactive design.

Instructional design, in particular is about increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of instructions and other learning experiences by maximizing its appeal.

Information Design is fundamentally about translating complex data into graphs, maps and diagrams so that it is easy to read and can be quickly responded to. The best and most successful information design communicates the message clearly and accurately without compromising the quality of the information.
